Misahualli Beach: Where Monkeys Roam Free! Guide

Welcome to Misahualli Beach, a truly unique Amazonian experience! Unlike typical beaches, this isn't about sunbathing and swimming in the ocean. Instead, prepare to be greeted by playful monkeys who call this sandy riverbank home. Located in the small town of Misahualli, where the Misahualli and Napo rivers meet, this beach offers a fascinating glimpse into the Amazon rainforest and its incredible wildlife. Misahualli's history is intertwined with its role as a trading post and gateway to the Amazon. For centuries, indigenous communities used the rivers for transportation and commerce. The town later became a hub for rubber extraction and other resources. Today, Misahualli thrives on tourism, offering visitors a chance to explore the rainforest, interact with local cultures, and, of course, meet the famous monkeys. The main attraction is undoubtedly the capuchin monkeys that freely roam the beach and town square. Be aware that these monkeys are wild animals and can be mischievous! Keep your belongings secure, especially food, as they are known to snatch snacks. Beyond the monkeys, you can take a boat trip down the Napo River, visit indigenous communities, explore nearby waterfalls, or simply relax and soak in the atmosphere of this unique Amazonian town. The local restaurants offer traditional Ecuadorian cuisine, often featuring fresh fish from the river and locally grown produce. Don't miss the chance to try "maito," fish wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over an open fire.
